What is Mary Kay Cosmetics?
Mary Kay is an American cosmetics company founded in 1963 by Mary Kay Ash.
The company is based in Texas and is currently managed by Richard Rogers (Mary Kay’s son) and David Holl.
In 2018, Mary Kay became the sixth largest network marketing company in the world.
How do you become a Mary Kay consultant?
Based on marykay.co.uk:
- Go to Mary Kay’s website and click on “Be a Beauty Consultant”, then click on “Get Started” at the top of the website
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “Get Started Today”
- Click on “Sign Up Now”
- Start a new agreement to join Mary Kay as a consultant
- Follow the instructions provided on screen
How much does it cost to be a Mary Kay consultant?
When you join Mary Kay, you will be prompted to purchasing a $100 starter kit which will allow you to start your business.
The starter kit contains:
- Retail-sized products
- Sales tips
During my research though, I have discovered that in order for you to keep your active status, you will also have to purchase $200 worth of products every 3 months.
That is a lot of money to invest if you are just starting out your business and want to first test the waters!
Can I return my Mary Kay starter kit?
According to pinktruth.com here are the rules when it comes to returning your Mary Kay kit:
“If you want to cancel your agreement, return your starter kit, and get your money back, there are two options. With both of these options, the starter kit must be unused:
- You can return the starter kit within 30 days after Mary Kay Inc. accepts your agreement for a 100% refund.
- You can return the starter kit within 1 year of purchase for a 90% refund.”
This applies to residents of the United States, but I would assume that this kind of policy applies more or less to other countries too.
How much money does a Mary Kay consultant make?
It all depends on how much you are willing to invest, the effort you put into selling and whether your marketing strategies are good or not.
Unfortunately MLM companies teach you ineffective strategies such as “selling products to family and friends”.
The problem with Mary Kay is that you need to invest a lot of money to remain an active consultant, therefore you must be able to market the products correctly in order to avoid losing all your money.
Watch the video below to hear what this lady had to say about her Mary Kay earnings:
Mary Kay compensation plan
There are basically 2 ways you can make money with Mary Kay:
- Selling products
- Recruiting people and getting commission from their sales
The lady in this video explains more about Mary Kay compensation plan and rewards:
Do you make more money selling Avon or Mary Kay?
Mary Kay pays higher commission than Avon.
Mary Kay‘s commission is 50% while Avon is between 20% to 25% depending on how much you sell.
So overall you might be able to earn more selling Mary Kay.
Can you sell Mary Kay online?
You can get your very own space on Mary Kay‘s website where you will be able to sell your products online.
However, you can not sell via platforms such as eBay.
Most consultants will push you to use outdated marketing strategies, such as sharing your website URL on Facebook, however these techniques do not work.
People on social media want to be social, they do not want to be spammed!
The best way to promote your Mary Kay‘s space is to actually start your own blog, review Mary Kay‘s products and link these reviews to your Mary Kay‘s website.
This will create a better relationship with your potential customers and it will also make you stand out.

Is Mary Kay a Pyramid Scheme?
No, Mary Kay is not a Pyramid Scheme.
Mary Kay is an MLM.
The difference is that with Pyramid Schemes, the earning potentials would only come from recruitment.
MLM companies allow you to earn money by selling products too.
This is why Mary Kay is not a Pyramid Scheme.
