Can You Have a Facebook Business Page Without a Personal Profile?

Facebook was launched on February 4, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.

The founders initially created the platform to allow Harvard students to connect with each other through an online community and eventually expanded the access to other schools and universities.

In 2006, Facebook was opened to the public to anyone over 13 years old with a valid email address.

There are now over 2 billion users on this social media platform and Facebook has evolved so much, to the point that it has become one of the most powerful marketing tools of these days.

Companies can create their own business page and connect with current clients, as well as reaching new ones both organically and with paid adverts.

But can you have a Facebook Business Page without a personal profile?

What is a Facebook business page?

A Facebook business page is a free public profile that you can create for business. This will allow your customers to follow your business online, engage with you and see all of your latest work and news.

The good thing is that, all the activities on your page can be tracked by a tool that comes with it, called Facebook Analytics This will allow you to see what types of customers you are attracting, so that you can promote the right products.

You can also see what are the posts that your customers engage with the most. Let’s say your page gets a lot of engagement when you post videos, you might then want to make video posting a regular activity for your business.

Here are some things customers can do on your business page:

  • View and like your posts
  • Leave comments on posts, photos and videos
  • Contact you via private messages
  • Find your business website, number, email address and physical address
  • Invite their friends to like your business page (more customers… Yay!)

If you are ready to create your business page, this article will guide you step by step and your page will be up and running in no time!

So, can you have a Facebook business page without a personal profile?

Unfortunately, you can’t! All pages need to be linked to a private profile, however there is a workaround for this. Here is what I suggest you do:

1. Go to Facebook’s sign up page and fill in the “Create an account” section:

Don’t worry about privacy! Nobody will be able to see that your private profile is connected to your business page! You can also make your private profile private, so that nobody can find it. This way, you will just have a profile  set up only for the sake of creating a page.

2. Check your email. You should have received an activation code, which you need to enter on the below screen:

Facebook Activation Code

3. After entering the code and clicking on “Continue”, you will be taken to a “profile set up” page:

Facebook Set Up

4. Ignore all the above settings and go straight to https://www.facebook.com/settings:

Facebook Privacy Settings

5. Click on Privacy (4th option on the left) and make your profile completely private by changing the options as per the screenshot below:

Privacy settings and tools

Please note that where it says “Friends”, for example “Who can look you up using the email address you provided?”, it will still be 100% private, since you won’t have any friend on Facebook who can look you up (As long as you keep your profile bare)!

1. Creating you Facebook business page

Congratulations! You are now ready to set up your business page!

Click on the drop-down on the top right-hand side of your profile and then click on “Create Page“.

If it’s easier for you, you can just click directly on this link.

2. Selecting your business category

You should now see the screen below:

Create a Facebook Business Page

Click on “Get Started” just below “Business or brand

3. Adding information about your company

Enter the company name in the “Page Name” field.

Choose the category that most closely fits your business. Some categories such as “Personal Blog” won’t require any further information but others, such as “Shopping Centre” will bring up the “Address” field.

If this is the case, you will have to enter an address, however you can choose to hide it by ticking the “Don’t show my address” option.

I would recommend you make the address visible, if your business is a physical retail:

4. Uploading a profile picture and a cover photo

The next step will be uploading a profile picture. I recommend you set this to be your business logo, so that this can be seen by your current and potential clients, every time you post something.

Once that is done, you will be taken to step #2, where you will be asked to upload a cover photo. Make sure you use a photo that is 820 pixels wide by 462 pixels tall. You can use free tools like Canva to easily create the perfect Facebook cover:

5. Creating the page @username and adding a short description

It is very important that you set up a username for your page. This will allow you to have your own URL, containing your business name, for example https://www.facebook.com/My-New-Business.

It will also allow people to tag you in their own posts, by using the tag @mynewbusiness.

Click on “Create Username” right below your page name. Choose and confirm your username:

Your username will now appear under the page name and your URL will change to reflect this.

Now that you are back on your home page, click on “Add a Short Description” and add a brief summary of what your page is about. Make sure it is has all the important information which will make potential clients want to know more about your business:

6. The final touches

Your Facebook page is pretty much done but there might be things that you want to add, before you start posting and inviting people to like your page.

You could add the story of your business in the About section (Click on “See more” below your business name and then click on “About”).

If there is an imminent event associated to your business, you can add that to the Events tab, which is just above the “About” one.

Explore your new page and feel free to add everything you feel like it is worth adding!

Remember that you can always go back and edit things, so do not worry about making mistakes!

7. Inviting friends and customers to like your page

If your business is new, it is important that you seek your friends’ support. Having a page with no likes, makes a page look like it is not worth following.

Invite your friends to like your page, so that future clients can see that your business is active.

If your business is already established and you have a list of your clients’ addresses, you can send them an email to let them know that you now have a Facebook page.

I would suggest you use Mailchimp, if you have a very long list of email addresses. This will allow you to send hundreds of emails in one click. Your customers will also be able to opt-out of receiving any further correspondences. Mailchimp is free if you have up to 2000 subscribers and send up to 12,000 emails a month!

8. Posting on your Facebook business page

Woo-hoo! Your first Facebook post!

You are now ready to engage with your clients. Simply click on “Create Post” and either post a straight forward status or choose any other relevant option:

Facebook Post

Remember that Facebook is a social media platform and therefore, it is important for you to be social. Follow these tips to have a successful business page:

  • Post regularly – The more active your page is, the more people will see your posts!
  • Don’t make it always about your business – You should avoid being pushy and constantly post “buy my stuff” kind of content. Create posts that allow people to engage in a conversation.
  • Use Facebook Analytics – Find out what types of customers like your page and what sort of posts are the most successful. This way you can follow the trend and ensure that your page is always engaging!
  • Respond to comments and private messages – Show people you want to help them. Earn their trust and they will come back!

I hope you have found this guide simple enough to follow and that you now know how to create a Facebook page without a personal profile 🙂

  1. Thanks for the easy-to-follow instructions on how to build a Facebook business page. It turns what could be a confusing process into one that is simple. Have you used it to grow your own website? And if so, has it made a significant impact on the amount of traffic you have received? I’ve looked into it before, but never knew if it was really worth it or not, so any advice you have is most appreciated!

    • Hi Steve,

Thank you for your comment and happy new year 🙂

I have used Facebook to promote my music. Thanks to the tips I  mentioned in my article, I managed to grow my page to 12,000 likes and made £3,000 in one year, which is pretty good for a musician who is not well known 🙂

I would say give it a go but have patience. You will see some results soon or later if you use your business page correctly!

  2. Hey there! Your title had me hooked in.  I truly thought you could have a business page without having a personal profile.  The step-by step instructions were awesome and easy to understand. Thanks for sharing the workaround, this may come in handy. I want to be clear, are you saying that all I have to do to my existing account is make the setting private?

    • Hi James,

      Thank you for your comment.

If you have a personal account that you already use, then you do not need to change its privacy settings.

My suggestion is just for those people who do not yet have a Facebook profile and they are “forced” to set one up in order for them to be able to create a business page.

I hope this clears things up 🙂

Even if you set your personal account to private, you can still find your friends on Facebook. You can add them and then invite them to like your page 🙂
